posterior teeth

AGC Wieland Electroforming / special cutters for posterior teeth

Depth markings can be made with the 1 mm depth cutters and the 1.4 mm torpedo bur to ensure correct anatomical preparation also in the case of posterior teeth for the recommended minimum reduction of 1.2 mm for buccal and lingual surfaces and 1.8 mm to 2.0 mm for occlusal areas (ISO shape 072, size 036 (additional water cooling required!) and ISO shape 289 [illustrated] / 290, size 014).

Occlusal reduction of hard tooth enamel (ISO shape 277, size 023), and proximal preparation tending to an approximal chamfer are carried out using the torpedo bur (ISO shape 289 [illustrated] / 290, size 014). Matrix bands may be needed to protect adjacent teeth.

The 014 torpedo bur is used to produce a slightly tapered preparation and to form a circular chamfer.

Final check and finishing: ensure anatomical chamfer preparation without edges or undercuts. Produce a smooth surface of the preparation using identically shaped carbide finishing burs (ISO version 072) at a speed of 15,000 - max. 40,000 rpm, or identically shaped extra-fine diamond finishing burs (ISO version 504).

This preparation guide is based on the recommendation published by Dr. G. Diedrichs in her book, Electroforming - Bioästhetik in der restaurativen Zahnheilkunde, Neuer Merkur 1995, and on the basic concepts of dental preparation set out by the International Institute for Dental Science and Technology (Director Dr. K. Kimmel), as fixed in the Dental-Vademekum since 1989.

Best results are obtained by:

ensuring an adequate supply of coolant (at least 50 ml/min.)

observing the bur speeds indicated in this guide and in the manufac-turer's instructions

avoiding sharp-edged preparations by using rounded bur-shapes

using medium-grit diamond burs (e.g. ISO 524) and identically shaped finishing burs to ensure that the surface roughness of the preparation is kept to a minimum.

The burs illustrated and recommended in this guide are taken from the Opti-Shape® (Order No. 2595) and Opti-Shape® Diamond (Order No. 2596) preparation kits by Hager & Meisinger.
